EQUINE EMBRYO TRANSFER SERVICES

  1. Proven success with non-surgical transfer of horse or mule embryos

  2. Mobile embryo transfer services within a designated area

  3. Embryo shipping to recipient mare facility

•  Embryo cryopreservation and storage for transfer at a later date

The embryo transfer (ET) procedure involves breeding the client's donor mare and recovering the resulting embryo by flushing the uterus approximately one week after ovulation.  At this stage, the embryo is microscopic in size.  The recovered embryo is then transferred into the uterus of a recipient mare whose cycle has been synchronized to be compatible with the cycle of the donor mare.  The recipient mare then carries the pregnancy to term and is the surrogate mother to the foal through weaning.  Embryo transfer is the most successful method for obtaining foals from valuable mares without their having to carry the pregnancy.  Embryo transfer is often the option of choice for owners of performance mares that are in training and competition, or for mares that conceive but do not carry the pregnancy to term.  Statistically, industry-wide, the embryo recovery rate for young fertile mares is approximately 60-70% and transfer success rate is approximately 75%.  Therefore, for any breeding cycle of the donor mare, there is approximately a 50% chance of establishing a successful pregnancy using embryo transfer.  For older mares with reproductive problems, the chances of success are much lower.  It is important for the mare owner to recognize these statistics, because it may take more than one try to achieve an embryo transfer pregnancy.   My ET services are provided on a per cycle basis using owner-provided recipient mares or a shipped embryo program at a recipient mare facility.

Starting in 2018, I am pleased to announce that I will be providing ET services at Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center (LBEMC) in Penryn, CA.  Your mare(s) can stay at LBEMC for breeding management and embryo recovery or can be managed at home for the breeding process and then trailered to LBEMC for the embryo flush procedure.
